Alex was running as quickly as his brace would allow.  It would be dark soon and he knew he wouldn't stand a chance if he didn't make it to town before the sun set.  His brace was squeaking and rattling violently with every step.  Alex feared the sound would attract
the attention of all the foul beasts in the forest, but he dare not slow his pace.  He heard all the stories of the hellish fiends in those trees, feasting upon the flesh of those foolish enough to wander too deep.

"Alexaaandeerrr..." the voice taunted.  It was the sounds of a woman's voice, almost sickeningly sweet and innocent, tainted black with malice.

Alex's heart caught in his throat. {She's found me!  I thought for sure I had lost her!}  he thought to himself as panic gripped his very essence. He looked behind to see if he could catch a glimpse of his pursuer.  In that very instant, his braced leg caught in a felled log.  In a moment of pain and despair he came crashing to the ground.

"There you are Alexander! I've been searching for you!"  she said with a giggle.  "Do not fear me, I only wish to end your plight!"

As she slithered closer, Alex's darkest fears came to life.  He had heard the stories of the serpent, but never imagined she would look like this.  Her scales had the sheen of cut emeralds and eyes of molten gold.  Her wings as pure and white as an angel's.
Her beauty, as he knew, was only a show, for the most beautiful things in this forest were often the most deadly.

"Be done with me then beast!  I cannot run nor can I fight, so end my agony!"  In saying so, he had already come to terms with the fate he fully anticipated to receive.

"Oh Alexander, that is not what I am here for, however I do have a gift for you."

With a blinding speed, the serpent lashed out to pierce Alex's mangled leg with her fangs.  The strike was so quick, he scarcely realized what happened until a searing agony consumed his leg.

"You disgusting fiend!  How dare you!  Instead on offering a quick, merciful death, you befoul my flesh further!  May God damn you to the deepest..."

"Silence you foolish human!" the serpent snapped.  "Not all serpents come bearing cursed fruit.  Just look at your leg..."

In his outburst, Alex hadn't noticed the shift of the agonizing pain to euphoric bliss.

"How can this be?" he asked.  "I saw your fangs pierce my leg, felt the venom course through my veins!"

"Not everything is always as it seems," she said simply.  "Now go, there are a great many thing you must do."

"What do you mean?" he asked, but she held no reply for him.  Instead she melted away with the rest of the world as all faded to black.

After what seemed like a lifetime, Alex heard something in the darkness.  {What is that sound?} he wondered.  Then he realized, it was his name being called.  Slowly it grew louder and louder, until it sounded as if the voice was right next to him.

"Alex! Alex! Wake up Alex!" the voice cried bearing a more than a hint of concern.

Alex awoke with a start.  The first thing he did was reach for his leg.  To his surprise it felt normal!  {Is this even possible?}

"What's wrong Alex?  Are you okay?" asked his wife.

"Oh nothing.  Just a nightmare about the winged serpent.  Probably just worried over my travels for tomorrow."

"You are so childish sometimes!  You know the winged serpent is nothing more than a child's bedtime story!  With your thrashing and screaming you had me scared half to death!"

"No need to worry over me love," he replied knowingly.  "Everything is going to be fine."  With that, he calmed his wife and himself back into slumber.  He knew he would need the rest, for in the morning, he was going to buy new boots, and then he was going to chase the dreams his previously mangled leg had long since denied him.
A story I wrote for my mother. A story of blessing from unexpected places.
